Everyone Hates a Winner

As I was watching TV the other day, I heard what I've come to expect any non-Yankee fan to say, I hate the Yankees, which made me wonder. Why do you hate the Yankees? I hear a lot of excuses. "The Yankees go and buy their team." This is skewed for two reasons. Sure the Yankees go get a player if they feel he can help the team, but few people notice that most of their team came up in their farm system. Second, George Steinbrenner doesn't even have as much money as other owners, but he understands business and understands you have to spend money to make money. He has a brilliant GM who can go get a player if need be and he has Steinbrenner's approval on money.

Another reason I hear is "They always win." Well, what would you rather them do? Lose? Just go and lay down in the field?  But now I realize the true problem; everyone hates a winner. Everyone hates the Yankees because they win. Everyone also hates Duke basketball, USC football, the Colts and the Patriots in pro football, the Lakers and the Bulls in their dynasties. To all the fans of those teams...I understand.

The cliché has always been everyone loves a winner and nobody loves a loser. True life is the exact opposite. When was the last time you heard a Braves fan say they hate the Cubs? When was the last time you heard anyone say they hated the Cubbies (who wasn’t from the South side of Chicago)? The Cubs are the biggest losers in sports right now. They haven't won a world series in a hundred years, but everyone loves them. The Yankees won a World Series 6 years ago and have won their division for 8 straight years, but no one likes them. I give up on fans...they are incapable of making sense.
