Curse of the Ring Mike DiPatri 09/15/08
We constantly hear about how the Red Sox suffered for 86 years under a curse that kept them from winning a championship and we hear that a curse has prevented the Cubs from winning one in like 100 years. OK, if you need an excuse. Winning a bunch of championships ain’t always such a good thing. I know you’re saying, Mike how can winning a bunch of championships be a bad thing? Well, let’s look at it.
These teams using the curse defense have become baseball’s most loved organizations, while the team with a bunch of championships is the most hated. Additionally, everybody expects the successful team to win every year. When a season comes along that sees that team has one like most teams in the league you hear how it just sucks. If that’s the case why don’t all the other teams suck every year? Don’t give me that payroll crap either. Those other teams have Major League players and players still have to play. Of course, in this discussion I’m referring to the Yankees. This attitude starts with those posers at ESPN. How come we never hear them say that this year, the Royals suck or the Nationals suck? It’s because they are not expected to win. It’s ok if they have a losing season; or even a mediocre season. You won’t even hear these guys mention the kind of season other teams are having unless they’re in first place. So why consistently report how the Yankees are having a bad season? It’s because, to them, the Yankees have won too many championships. What team would not like to win sometimes? I thought winning was what a team was supposed to try to do! I guess that does not mean the Yankees.
We Yankees fans know that our team will not win the Series every year and we’re ok with that. We like the fact that our team has won more than any other team. But, it seems that winning a lot has put our team in another box by itself. Others constantly ridicule our team when it has the kind of season almost every other team in the league has almost every year.
No team can win every year. Sometimes it will have mediocre or even bad seasons. A mediocre season for the Yankees means they suck. Those posers at ESPN perpetuate this attitude. Using their logic, winning a lot is a bad thing. If we believed in excuses, we could say it’s a curse.
